Around the 4th September 1896, the only 3 passenger cars built of
this size rolled out of the then Petone Workshops. These were A519,
A520, and A521, all being 35 foot, longitudinal 37 seater cars. They
were second class and had a smoking compartment. They also had a toilet
at one end. These also had gas - Incandescent lighting. |
Around 17th November 1900 Westinghouse brakes were fitted and on 8th
November 1919 standard platform gates were also fitted. These cars also
had fitted the new "Wairarapa style roof, and were allocated to the
Wellington area. The underframe was of Australian Tallowwood with the
body frame being Kauri and Red Pine. All window and ventilator frames
were of Teak. The outside sheathing was of T & G Red Pine while the
inside Paneling was of Kauri with the facings being Red Pine. |

A520 (body only) 35ft Passenger carriage. Built in Petone in 1896.
Converted to E car 1937. Written off in 1960. Club received this on 10
February 2001 from a Waitotara farm (owned by SteamRail). |
On 30th
January 1937 Car A519 became Ea351 and A520 became Ea352 and were based
in the Wanganui District and converted as sleeping huts for then Ways
and Works department. Car A521 was written off at the Hutt shops in
January 1956, and had remained a day car. |
The 2 cars A519 and A520 were
finally written off at the Easttown Workshops on the 17th August 1963.
It is thought that A519 / Ea351was then transferred to the Ferrymead
Railway. |
In around November of that year, Car A520 / Ea352 was then sold
locally and was shifted to a Waitotara site some miles away from
Wanganui. There the wagon was placed on piles and had a corrugated Iron
roof placed over the top protecting it from all the weather. This was
then used by the purchaser as sleeping quarters while he did his fencing
contracts around the district. This person was also a keen preserver and
so the carriage stayed in its original form apart from the odd coat of
paint. |
In July 1999 SteamRail Wanganui was informed that this car was no
longer required as the owner had since passed on and that it was in the
road for future expansions on the farm. Upon investigation and also
removing a number of layers of paint the members found that it was car
A520 and was at least 90 % still in it's original condition. |
In
January 2000 after the deceased daughters gifted the car to the group.
It was then transported to its present site at the SteamRail yard. To
the groups knowledge this is now the only remaining car in New Zealand
and has been placed temporarily on its double bogie underframe while
undergoing restoration back to its original condition. |
